Our oceans are filling with plastic, our atmosphere is clogged with pollution, the planet is warming at an alarming rate, and the eight billion humans who live on it already have 33% less fresh water than a few decades ago. Saving the world seems too huge a task to realistically achieve.

But we humans are an ingenious, creative and extremely adaptable species. Through collaboration and innovation, we have landed on the moon, doubled our average lifespans and connected over 63% of the population to a knowledge bank (aka the internet) that contains the entirety of our current civilization’s knowledge. Although the world’s problems loom large right now, together we can do difficult things.

SAP technology helps the world run better

SAP customers generate 87% of total global commerce, so SAP technologies are very much involved in how our world runs. Did you know that SAP’s purpose is to help the world run better and improve people's lives, with sustainability at the core? That’s an inspiring mission statement. In a business context, sustainability means doing business without negatively impacting the environment, community, or the wider society.

SAP’s strategy is to help organizations become intelligent (through deep and actionable insights into their data) and sustainable. Businesses running on SAP technologies can turn their sustainability vision into reality through the power of machine learning, IoT, AI and advanced analytics. Intelligent technology makes greener processes and innovations possible.

Clearly, the SAP community of customers, partners, and its 110,000 employees are a powerful force for positive change. United VARs members, all SAP Global Platinum Partners, are proud to be part of that community; helping global midmarket companies accelerate their digital transformation and improve their processes by working together as one team on international SAP rollouts.

The C-suite and consumers are driving sustainability

The United VARs SAP specialists have an intimate knowledge of the midmarket, and are starting to see increasing interest from business leaders who are looking to start their sustainability journey. Business leaders are well aware of how sustainability and ESG strategy can drive growth. A recent McKinsey survey discovered that 83% of C-suite leaders and investment professionals think that environmental, social, and governance (ESG) programs will contribute more to shareholder value in five years than they do today.

However, the drive for sustainability is not just top-down, it’s also coming from consumers. More than a third of the population is willing to pay more for sustainable products and services, according to the Global Sustainability Study 2021 survey which questioned 10,281 consumers across 17 countries. On average, consumers are happy to pay 25% more, and in the US that figure rises to a massive 42%. Clearly, companies must get their houses in order as soon as possible if they are to remain profitable and viable.

Manage your ‘green line’ with SAP sustainability solutions

To help enterprises establish and manage a ‘green line’ throughout their business, last year (2021), SAP launched the SAP Product Carbon Footprint Analytics. This was the first solution in SAP’s Climate 21 program that aims to reduce CO2e throughout the global supply chain. The software combines business data from SAP S/4HANA Cloud with environmental factors such as carbon, water, land use and energy consumption to calculate the carbon footprints and environmental impacts of products.

In January 2022, SAP launched a new offering to help our customers meet the growing demands of regulators and institutional investors focused on ECC. SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises is a comprehensive portfolio of solutions that can be tailored to customer needs.

Coldplay is reducing its carbon footprint with SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises

The world-famous band, Coldplay, is using SAP Cloud for Sustainable Enterprises to cut its carbon emissions by 50% on the 2022 world tour. The band's team can view environmental impacts by concert, country, and continent which helps them create effective strategies for reducing emissions. These include using solar power, biofuel, a mobile rechargeable battery and renewable grid electricity. They even install a kinetic floor at each venue that converts the fan’s dancing into energy to help power the show.

Christian Klein, CEO and Member of the Executive Board of SAP SE, says of the partnership with Coldplay, “With our technology and solutions, we empower organizations worldwide to drive sustainable change. Coldplay and SAP share a common and profound commitment to sustainability, and we are thrilled to join forces to make their tour as environmentally friendly as possible”.
