Ronnie Sung is the Co-Founder and Managing Director of DynaSys Solutions, the SAP systems integrator and Global Platinum Partner based in Hong Kong. Ronnie lives with his wife and two sons in Hong Kong.

Ronnie started off studying economics at University but soon found that he enjoyed using the computer to do his assignments, particularly the spreadsheet application, Lotus. So he changed his subject to management information systems. He says, “I like how to observe how businesses operate and how they make money. I also love to see how technology helps companies to run efficiently. I enjoyed learning accounting, marketing, operations, finance and combining that with programming and system design”.

Extensive experience in SAP leads to the birth of DynaSys

Ronnie’s first job was as a support analyst at a midsize software development house in Montreal, Canada. After seven years, he returned to Hong Kong to work for SAP and has stayed in the SAP ecosystem ever since. In 2008, he left his role as VP of SME at SAP Greater China to set up DynaSys. The company has grown to approximately 100 employees, with offices in Hong Kong and Taiwan.

Ronnie says, “I always loved SAP products because they are so powerful and cover so many functions. I felt proud to implement such a reputable system, so when I left SAP I still wanted to sell something that I believe in, that makes me proud and enables me to improve my customers’ business and ultimately make money for them”.

When DynaSys first started, most of its customers were in manufacturing, retail, and utilities. All of which are traditionally very strong markets for SAP. The company now has customers spanning many sectors, including property management, food, finance and government.

Dedicated to long-term partnerships

DynaSys is proud to have customers that continue to work with the SAP specialist over a long period. Some customers have been working with DynaSys for over fifteen years. Ronnie says their success is due to their expertise and reliability plus the fact that they are focused solely on SAP technology. DynaSys provides both implementation and support services for a broad range of SAP systems, including SAP S/4HANA, SAP SuccessFactors, SAP CX and SAP Ariba.

The company intends to maintain its focus on SAP solutions and to continually invest in delivering all the different cloud solutions that SAP provides. Ronnie explains, “With the cloud solutions, there is a lot of room for us to provide additional functionality for our customers. You can’t change too much inside the cloud platform itself, but you can build all types of satellite solutions around the cloud. We are also expanding our coverage to our customers, to handle the integration between the various cloud solutions”.

Connected to the best partners for SAP global rollouts

Many of DynaSys’ projects were multi-country, so it joined United VARs in 2015 to offer its customers the best local SAP specialists for global SAP rollouts. The global alliance is very important to Ronnie and his team because the SAP partners within United VARs are experienced in collaborating across countries and continents, and the connection is personal. It makes a difference when you not only know who the best and most reliable SAP partners are for global rollouts, but that you actually know the bosses of those partner companies.

However, the benefits of being in the United VARs network go beyond having the best local resources for multi-country SAP rollouts. Ronnie explains, “The United VARs members around the world, especially from Europe and the States, are very advanced and dedicated to teaching the rest of the network. They often have information direct from SAP before we do and are six to twelve months ahead of us in their adoption of the solutions so engaging with them helps us to learn faster. We also learn from them what kind of services are proving most beneficial to their customers and so they help us not just in terms of technology, but also in terms of running the business effectively. There are mechanisms within United VARs that help us all to share our ideas and experiences together and come up with joint packages to offer our global customers”.

Doing business in Hong Kong, and mainland China

Hong Kong is more Westernized than mainland China, both in its culture and in how it does business. There aren’t any major cultural differences to consider when working with Hong Kong-based organizations and its tax system is relatively simple. United VARs members welcome DynaSys’ knowledge of the legal requirements in Hong Kong but in general, SAP implementations there are straightforward.

It’s a different matter in mainland China though. In Chinese culture, the business relationship is paramount, and it takes more time to build up mutual trust. Also, companies in mainland China tend to be large. An organization with 5,000 employees is considered small, and many of them have 200,000 to 300,000 staff which is more like dealing with a small city than an organization. So, the complexity can be immense.

Surprisingly, Ronnie says that the language barrier has greatly reduced in recent years because most companies based in bigger cities, such as Shanghai and Beijing, have a lot of people who can speak English. He observes that the increase in political tension between East and West is currently one of the biggest concerns for Chinese companies and that many of his discussions with other business leaders is about how to mitigate the risk if this increases.

“We’re looking at how to ensure supply chain continuity if tariffs between countries go up and what we can do from a technology point of view to ensure companies can survive if the political situation, especially between the States and China, gets worse. Of course, supply chain issues came to the forefront during the Covid restrictions, and this is a really important area for us all to keep focusing on”.

Due to the rise in remote working over the last few years, technology has become more of a priority for many Chinese organizations, just as it has for Western ones. DynaSys continues to grow its business; moving companies to the cloud, automating key processes and implementing more advanced HR practices, through SAP technologies, to keep employees motivated and productive even when they must work remotely.
